Optimising the design of a computer to its intended task can result in power savings of over $100 per computer per year without sacrificing real-life performance.
Much of the computing power of most computers is not used, but still uses electrical power, power that is simply expended as heat (causing additional air-conditioning demands!)
  Going Green together

Computers are designed to do a wide variety of tasks, including some that are quite demanding. But most are used for tasks that call for much less computing power.

However, that unused computing power is still drawing electrical power, costing in power bills much the same as the computer's purchasing price.

A detailed assessment of the actual requirements for a computer, and specifying and designing a computer that meets those requirements with the minimum unused performance margin, can save many hundreds of dollars per computer.

Of course, the computer's needs must be projected over its extended life - five to six years - and discipline must be exercised to maintain and manage the computer over its life-span.
